Jazz Band

Class Information

Jazz Band at Cherry Ave is open to 7th and 8th grade students by audition only. Students are expected to be proficient on their instrument and have basic sight reading and musicianships skills. Jazz Band will focus on traditional genres of jazz literature, sight reading, improvisation, scales, and advanced performance and soloing techniques. All Jazz Band members are expected to participate in the Advanced Band as well as the Bulldog Marching Band and are encouraged to audition for honors programs and ensembles throughout Tulare/Kings Counties. The Jazz Band serves as musical ambassadors for Cherry Ave and members are expected to perform for Festivals, Concerts, and recruiting events.

All instrumental ensembles are under the direction of:

Mr. Ray.

Mr. Ray is the current Director of Bands here at Cherry Ave. Middle School. Before teaching at Cherry Mr. Ray was the Director of Bands and VAPA Department Head at Mt. Whitney High School from 2007-2015. Mr. Ray earned his B.A. in Music from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and a Masters in Music in Instrumental Conducting through the American Band College of Sam Houston State University.

Mr. Daniels

Mr. Daniels is the Assistant Band Director for the Jr. High programs as well as the Co-Director for the 6th grade programs at Cherry Ave. In addition to Cherry Ave. Mr. Daniels is also the head director at Garden Elementary.
